ASSOCIATE VETERINARIAN – F/T or P/T or a Flexible Combination

(Updated: April 2019)

The Bonnyville Veterinary Clinic is a busy, excitingmixed animal practice in rural Alberta; and is a division of Animal Health Providers Ltd.  We are a progressive practice with a shared vision of leading the industry standard for rural practices.  We currently employ 3 ½ DVMs, and 7 ½ support staff and practice high-level medicine and surgery on small and large animals alike.

To achieve this, we have a fully-equipped newly renovated 4,000 ft2 main/companion animal building along with separate, stand-alone indoor equine and bovine facilities. We offer a full complement of diagnostics including digital x-ray (including dental radiography), endoscopy, ultrasonography, orthopedic surgeries, an in-house lab, and comprehensive wellness programs

The custom-built external bovine handling system allows cattle entry to the bovine facility, which is complete with a hydraulic tip table, a hydraulic squeeze chute, a bull testing chute and a rotating maternity chute with electric hoist.  This allows us to treat >95% of individual animal visits in clinic. For most herd-based appointments, we transport the hydraulic squeeze chute to the site, which has increased our customer satisfaction, team safety and overall efficiency exponentially.

Equine services are primarily provided on-site, as we have a top-notch equine facility comprised of inside stabling, examination/treatment stocks and an operating theatre with padded induction/recovery stall, as well as outdoor paddocks.  Our clinic is equipped with different footings which allows us to conduct more complete lameness exams.

The practice has a high pace of work, which means we are looking for an applicant who is passionate about the job, wants to learn a broad range of knowledge and has a strong work ethic. Our practice also offers final year rotations for UCVM in Calgary, Alberta; consequently, we are quite familiar with teaching/mentoring.  We have in place a structured, yet flexible mentorship program, which is adjusted to each individual’s learning curve.  The feedback from the program has been positive, our new DVM’s have stated that the slower transition made them feel supported and more capable.  Our team is passionate about helping ensure the transition from student to doctor is as smooth as possible.

Our DVMs come from varied educational backgrounds, which provides diversity in education and experience.  Here is a quick introduction to our DVMs and their areas of interest:

Dr. Greg Benoit – Graduate of SGU (Grenada) in 2005.

Dr. Benoit and his wife Allison are the owners of Animal Health Providers Ltd., and Dr. Benoit shares his time between BVC and our sister clinic, Centre Animal Hospital, in Cold Lake, Alberta.

Special Areas of Interest:  Small animal orthopedic sx, everything to do with equine medicine, and the variety a mixed animal practice brings.

Dr. Tammy Anderson – Graduate of AVC in 2008.

Special Areas of Interest:  Soft tissue sx in small animal, complicated small animal medicine cases, dermatology, ophthalmology, equine medicine cases and nutrition.

Dr. Melanie Koetke – Graduate of WCVM in 2017

Special Areas of Interest: Bovine reproduction (AI, embryo transfer and bull soundness), bovine lameness, small ruminant medicine, ophthalmology, soft tissue sx and small animal behavior.

This position we are looking to staff involves a flexible combination of companion animal, bovine and equine medicine.  Our clientele is significant & diverse and can support many areas of special interest.  We offer 24-hr emergency services and share the on-call responsibilities with our sister clinic; which translates to an average of 5-7 days of on-call per month for our Full-time DVM’s.  The available position holds the potential to be F/T, P/T or a flexible combination of the two.  We are located in Bonnyville, Alberta; a small, friendly town in north-eastern Alberta.

Our compensation package is valued at over $100,000.  This package includes a starting salary for new grads of $85,000 plus compensated, shared on-call   Other perks such as license dues, paid holiday time, CE, phone and clothing allowance and health care plans are also part of the compensation package.  A relocation allowance will also be offered to the successful applicant to help offset the costs associated with moving; and is in addition to the package value.
